PEOPLE heading to car boot sales this Easter are being warned against buying faulty goods.
Michael Walsh, trading standards manager with Hartlepool Borough Council, said those looking for a bargain should err on the side of caution and put safety first.
He said: "Many car boot sellers will be looking in their garden shed, garage or loft for items they do not need any more to sell at one of the many car boot sales in the North-East.
"Car boot sales are one way of people getting out and about at the weekends while picking up a bargain, but there are serious safety implications in purchasing certain goods.
"We would advise against buying second-hand safety items such as children's car seats, or cycling and riding helmets, which may not comply with the latest safety standards.
"An old helmet or seat may have an unseen crack, or weakness, that could prove fatal."
Mr Welsh also reminded people of the dangers of buying second-hand electrical goods.
