A FORGOTTEN church flag has been flown for the first time in 50 years.
The St George flag, bought to commemorate the Queen's Coronation in 1953, was recently discovered in a corner of the clock tower at Holy Trinity Church, in Darlington.
The Reverend Barnaby Huish, who found the flag before Christmas, has been unable to find out if it was ever used after the coronation.
Its ropes are clean and look new, so Mr Huish has concluded that it was never flown again - until now.
Tomorrow, the flag will be attached to a new flagpole, built to replace the church's original one, which was removed in the 1980s.
The flag will continue to be used, flying on all important dates in the church's calendar.
The flying of the flag will also mark Mr Huish's last day as curate at the church before he moves to a new job as precentor at St Albans Cathedral next month.
