MEMBERS of Cleveland Police Authority have given themselves a pay rise.
The authority met on Thursday and agreed to adopt an hourly rate of £18 and a maximum yearly income of £8,000 for members' attendance allowance -an increase of £1 an hour and £500 a year.
The chairman can now earn a maximum of £12,000 a year, which is £750 more than last year.
Authority vice-chairman Russell Hart said now was not the time for members to get a pay rise.
"It's very much in our minds that the council tax precept went up in the Cleveland area and I think there's a need to share the burden and send out a positive message to the people who pay the precept," he said.
However, a majority of members disagreed with him and voted for the increase. The allowance will be reviewed by an independent body in a year's time.
