With the amount of all-weather regulars in attendance at Southwell today, it's more than a passing thought that a few trainers didn't realise that five of the six races are on the Turf track.
While High Policy has been in good form on sand this winter, he showed enough at Nottingham on ground softer than ideal last week to suggest that he has strong claims in the Battle Of Copenhagen Handicap over two miles.
Ridden by Stephanie Hollinshead, the six-year-old was well-backed and ran creditably. But the ease in the ground seemed to find him out in the closing stages and he could only manage sixth to the progressive Junkanoo.
However, on this better ground over this longer trip and with Graham Gibbons back in the saddle he's taken to reverse placings with Simple Ideals, who also should be thereabouts.
Robert Cowell has his string in good heart at present and his Nassau Night looks interesting on only his second run on Turf in the southwell-racecourse.co.uk Handicap over seven furlongs.
The son of Bahamian Bounty wasn't at all disgraced on his debut at Brighton on fast ground and, although he had the rub of things on sand last time, he comes here fit and well and he has enough toe to offset the drop back to seven furlongs.
Brian Pearce is no stranger to having a tilt at the ring and it won't come as a surprise if there's any market support for Shaman in the Feast Of Acan Apprentice Handicap over a mile and three furlongs.
Turf and sand come alike to the gelding - he's won three times on both surfaces - and although below his best of late he has fair claims over this trip and on this good ground in this modest race.
Mark Brisbourne is a trainer worth following this season and his River Ensign makes a fair bit of appeal in an ordinary looking Sponsor A Race At Southwell Fillies Handicap over a mile and a quarter.
The consistent daughter of River God has been in fair heart this winter on sand and if she gets an uncontested lead she could be hard to peg back.
She's certainly on a favourable mark at present as she's 11lb lower than her last win on Turf and she has won over this course and distance on grass. She's preferred to stable-companion Tycoon's Last.
At Uttoxeter Rhapsody In Blue makes a fair bit of appeal in the uttoxeter-racecourse.co.uk Selling Handicap over three miles.
A dual winner over hurdles this season, the seven-year-old ran well when put over fences for only the second time when fourth to Alpha Gold at Huntingdon recently.
That form was advertised when third- placed Harry Hotspur won back over the same course and distance on his next outing and this represents a drop in grade.
The best bet at Warwick could be Ian Williams' Mi Odds, a winner on his hurdles debut, in the Leek Wooton Novices Handicap hurdle over two miles.
