A FIRM in the North-East has won a contract to produce electronic road signs.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) is to supply 104 signs and mounting structures on the country's main motorways and trunk roads.
The signs will display driver information and control lane speeds, which should allow the police to improve traffic management and allow faster response times to incidents by the emergency services.
VMS said it will protect the 30 jobs at its Gateshead site and generate a substantial amount of work for its suppliers, which are mainly located within a 20-mile radius.
Roger Stainforth, the firm's managing director, said: "The size of the order will mean that over the next two years we will be putting a lot of work in our suppliers' paths, supporting the local economy and helping to sustain jobs in the supply chain."
