A 71-year-old motorist was in a critical condition in hospital last night following an accident on the A1, near Durham City.
The pensioner was taken to Newcastle General Hospital with broken legs and a broken pelvis after his Renault Scenic collided with a lorry on the northbound lane of the motorway, near Bowburn, County Durham.
The lorry driver was unhurt.
The accident happened just after 9pm on Sunday, when the Scenic collided with the rear of the lorry, leaving the driver with multiple injuries.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
Acting Inspector John Wesencraft, of Durham Police, said last night: "The accident appears to have occurred when, for no apparent reason, the Renault Scenic collided with the rear end of the articulated vehicle.
"At the time of the collision, the weather was fine and the roads were dry.
"Any information regarding this accident would be gratefully received."
