AN anti-crime initiative on the North Yorkshire coast has been rewarded with recognition by the Home Office.
The Scarborough Anti-Theft Group Partnership's Business Crime Check has won the resort a Safer Shopping Award following visits from officials.
Home Office officials launched the awards two years ago as a tactic to stamp out shoplifting in towns and cities across Britain.
Chairwoman of the Scarborough partnership, Janet Jefferson, said the award would boost the town's economy. She said it would promote Scarborough as a safe shopping destination, crucial because the retail trade was a vital part of the local tourism and leisure industry.
"As a group we are aware shoplifting is a continued problem. However, residents and visitors can feel assured that we are well and truly tackling the problem," she said.
