RETIRED woodman Jack Gray proved he was a dab hand at paste eggs when he took first prize at the annual Easter egg-jarping contest at a dales pub at the weekend.
He beat more than 80 other entries to win the trophy, presented by the Sunday Club at the Cross Keys, Eastgate, in Weardale.
He shattered any dreams local farmer William Hutchinson and pub landlord Athol Graham may have had of becoming champions at the art of breaking the shells of opponents' hard-boiled eggs.
Jack is a founder member of the Sunday Club, which also stages hay-sniffing and decorated chocolate cake competitions at the Cross Keys.
The event raised several hundred pounds for village charities.
