A bolt from a crossbow was fired through a window early yesterday, in an apparently motiveless attack.
The 12in bolt ended up embedded in the living room wall of a house, in the Moorside area of Consett.
Police cannot establish a reason why the 46-year-old occupant of the home was singled out for the attack.
Investigating officer PC Graeme Whitfield said: "This was an incredibly irresponsible act, which could have had lethal consequences."
Crossbows are not prohibited weapons, but their use is restricted. Anyone with information should call police on (01207) 504204
