THE latest initiative to tackle the problem of stray dogs was launched yesterday.
Middlesbrough Council has teamed up with the National Canine Defence League (NCDL) to offer the town's dog owners free microchips for their pets.
The aim of the national pilot scheme is to microchip as many dogs as possible and monitor the effect on the town's stray dog population and the local environment.
Councillor Oliver Johnson, commissioner for the environment with the council, said: "I would urge all residents who qualify, to take advantage of this generous offer from the NCDL. We have shown that microchipping is a simple way to reduce stray dog numbers and dog fouling, and improve the local environment."
Denise Gilgallon, regional campaign manager for the NCDL, said: "We are extremely happy to be part of this joint initiative with Middlesbrough Council."
In addition, the council is running a series of chipping days around the town, which is being organised and promoted through the network of community councils.
The NCDL is also offering pet owners who receive means tested benefits a subsidised fee of £20 to neuter dogs.
Details are available by calling 0845 6063036.
The offer is available until June and is open to anyone who receives a state benefit of any sort.
