MOTORISTS in North Yorkshire are facing a police clampdown on speeding after a spate of accidents.
North Yorkshire police issued a safety warning to bikers who traditionally head for open countryside in North Yorkshire at this time of year.
The move follows seven accidents last weekend, including one near Whitby where a man from the Barnsley area had his right leg amputated in hospital after his Honda Fireblade was involved in a collision with a lorry.
This week the police launched a responsible rider campaign, with officers planning checks on both bikes and riders.
It is a joint venture including motoring organisations, the Yorkshire Dales National Park authority and the vehicle inspectorate.
Sgt John Lumbard said: "Throughout last summer we received regular complaints about motorcycles travelling at excessive speed, making excessive noise and inconsiderate riding. All of these issues have a detrimental effect on the quality of life of local residents.
"The aim of the initiative is to target only the riders who are causing the problems, and to encourage them to ride responsibly."
