MORE should be done to attract younger people to holiday in the Yorkshire Dales, the deputy chairman of the national park authority has said.
Coun John Blackie said the Yorkshire Dales joint promotions initiative, a collection of local authorities which promotes the area to tourists, should try to bring in more young visitors.
A report showed that only 20pc of visitors to the national park were aged under 45.
It was endorsed by the park authority at its meeting at Middleham last week, but some members hoped more could be done to boost visitor numbers.
Jerry Pearlman said the area lacked wet weather activities and suspected that this dissuaded many families from staying in the national park.
However, Nancy Steadman said the countryside which the authority sought to protect, and which attracted tourists, would be compromised if buildings for wet weather activities were encouraged.
The authority agreed to support the initiative for a further three years
