MOTORISTS in Bishop Auckland are being urged to be vigilant after a spate of vehicle break-ins in the town.
A total of 13 vehicles have been broken into by thieves around the town centre, prompting police to issue warnings.
Sergeant Kevin Tuck, from Bishop Auckland police, said thieves were smashing the windows of vehicles to get access to car radios and mobile telephones.
He said: "We would appeal to shoppers to please give us a call if they see anything suspicious. We would rather be called out than have this happen to someone else."
Sgt Tuck said motorists should be aware of where they are parking and not leave valuables on display.
Drivers who have radios with removable fronts should take them out when they go shopping and not leave them on the radio or hidden in the car.
Anyone with information about car crime is asked to call police on (01388) 603566.
