Middlesbrough 2 - 1 Aston Villa - Old boy Ugo Ehiogu haunted Aston Villa again with a 65th minute winner at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.
The former Villa centre-back, who scored on his return with Boro last season, struck once more with a bullet header on the end of Benito Carbone's left-wing corner.
Carbone himself another former Villa star had given Boro a 38th minute lead when he latched onto Franck Queudrue's centre to shake off Steve Staunton and prod home his first goal for the Teessiders since he arrived on loan from Bradford in February.
Villa pulled one back on the hour when Juan Pablo Angel finished first time from a Peter Crouch knock down.
But Boro suffered a blow ahead of next Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal at Old Trafford when Noel Whelan was forced off in only the 10th minute with a suspected hamstring injury.
