A FAMILY butcher's business has unveiled a £2.5m development plan, which would create up to 50 jobs.

The plan was presented by Michael Dickson, managing director of M I Dicksons, to South Shields MP David Miliband when they toured the firm's production plant and offices at Heddon Way, on the Middlefields Industrial Estate, in South Shields.

It includes expanding the plant to nearly double its size and the opening of four more shops in time for the firm's 50th anniversary next year.

Mr Dickson said: "The proposals are to expand our current factory area by 40 per cent and carry out internal refurbishment to our existing accommodation, which will ensure we maintain the high standards our customers expect.

"We intend to apply for funding for the project from One Northeast and Defra, and a final decision on whether or not to proceed is dependent on getting the green light from both."

Under the programme, there would be improved staff facilities, additional offices, a new training room, additional chilled and frozen storage capacity, an extended baking hall and a new high care area for baked goods.

New tray washing facilities would be installed and a separate production area for coleslaw and sandwich fillings established.

Mr Miliband said: "Family businesses make a real contribution to the region's economy, and it was good to meet some of the workforce and learn first hand of the progress being made."

As well as supplying its own 16 North-East outlets, Dicksons caters for sports stadia, stores and delicatessens throughout the region.
