A NORTH-EAST man has won his battle with the bulge.
Stephen Clarey, 34, of Shildon, County Durham, decided to embark on a strict exercise programme after his weight crept up to 16st.
Mr Clarey joined Sedgefield Borough Council's Fit For Life programme and, after attending the twice-weekly meetings his weight dropped to 11st 8lbs in five months.
Encouraged by his wife, Suzanne, and friends, Mr Clarey changed his diet and started exercising.
"It's been mentioned that I could be seen to be an inspiration to others following the way I've lost the weight," he said.
"I want to lose my eight pounds to get back to 11st, but it won't take me long."
The programme involved a high carbohydrate and low fat diet, which gave him the energy to exercise and burn off calories.
"We didn't realise he was going to get so far," said his wife. "Once he got his mind set on it, though, it was easy."
