A CITY'S newest bridge will be opened on Friday.
Durham MP Gerry Steinberg will perform the ceremony at the Pennyferry bridge, spanning the River Wear to the Sands car park.
The £500,000 footbridge is one of the final elements of Durham's £30m Millennium City development, including the Gala Theatre.
Mr Steinberg will give old pennies to the first 20 people to cross the bridge, which has been funded by the Millennium Commission, Durham City Council and Durham County Council.
The bridge is named after a ferry which used to cross the river nearby.
