A TRADITION begun in a Dales market town at the beginning of the last century returns this weekend after missing a year due to the foot-and-mouth crisis.
Leyburn's spring fair was originally held when farmers were recruiting young men to work through the summer.
Staged by the same family for more 100 years, the event has only ever been halted before by war.
"However, foot-and-mouth restrictions kept us away last year so we're aiming to make this year's fair bigger and better than ever," said spokesman John Murphy.
Attractions will include dodgems and side shows as well as a white-knuckle ride called The Edge. New this year is The Rotor, which uses centrifugal force to thrill.
The fair opens at 6pm on Friday, 2pm on Saturday and 6pm on Monday.
