A MAN was sent for trial by jury by magistrates at Harrogate yesterday after allegations that child pornography from the Internet had been found on his computer.
Shane Neil Hare, 21, of Canal Side, Ripon, pleaded not guilty to making indecent photographs of a child and to possession of indecent photographs of children. He was remanded on bail to appear at York Crown Court on May 20.
TEACHER DIES: PE teacher and sportsman Alan Smith, of Scarborough, has died aged 67. He taught at the town's former Westwood School and at Raincliffe School. He also ran the North Yorkshire Schools Cricket Association and county schools football events. He played for Scarborough Rugby Union Football Club, was secretary of Scarborough and District Schools Cricket League and life president of the town's Football Association.
WATER MONEY: The Castle Howard Arboretum Trust, which is run by Kew Gardens, has been given a £2,500 grant by Yorkshire Water to help save silted-up ponds on the estate. Some of the money is also expected to help improve access.
HOSPICE CASH: A charity auction at the national conference of the Association of Electoral Administrators in Harrogate raised £325 for the town's St Michael's Hospice.
