METHODIST churches in east Durham are set for a mini windfall, thanks to a mother's efforts in a long-distance run.
Christine Bailey, of Peterlee, has been training for weeks in preparation for this weekend's London Marathon.
When she heard from a friend how several Methodist churches had suffered break-ins and vandalism and were badly in need of funds, she decided to try to help them out.
Mrs Bailey, who has three children - Martin, 14, Trudy, 12 and eight-year-old Lloyd - has already taken part in and completed seven Great North Runs.
She has, however, always wanted to take part in a full marathon.
With the go-ahead to line up for the world-renowned London race in the bag, she began seeking sponsorship to help raise money for the Methodist churches, as well as for her local Council for Voluntary Service.
"I am hoping to raise as much as possible as well as fulfilling a long-held ambition to take part in the marathon," said Mrs Bailey, 32, who, with her husband, Mark, also cares for their 18-year-old niece, Michelle Prested.
The couple will leave for London today. Mrs Bailey is confident that she will complete the course.
