Vandal attack condemned

COUNCILLORS have called for a police crackdown after vandals targeted the office of a Bedale estate agent. Police were challenged to say what they were doing to deal with teenagers who, according to deputy mayor John Noone, had destroyed downpipes, broken a window, made a hole in the roof and scrawled obscene graffiti on the walls of the Bridge Street building. PC Taylforth said a new shift pattern would be introduced, to deter or reduce vandalism. He said parents could be spoken to and a designated officer would have responsibility for visiting schools.

SKATEBOARD WOE: PC Taylforth confirmed that there had been an increase in complaints about skateboarders, probably arising from the Easter school break. Most originated from the Southfields estate, where local children were joined by others from the surrounding area. He understood, however, that talks were taking place with Hambleton District Council about planning restrictions on the old children's play area in Bedale Hall park, where a skateboarding site had been suggested.

GOLDEN JUBILEE: The finances of the town council group organising celebrations to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee were in a healthy state, said Coun Noone. As well as £1,500 contributed by the town council, £500 had been received from the Chamber of Trade and Aiskew Parish Council, plus a private donation of £360.
