TEACHERS and pupils spent last night sleeping on a school hall floor to help achieve specialist school status.
Thirty-eight children from years seven and eight at Hurworth Comprehensive School, near Darlington, were joined with their sleeping bags by their headteacher and staff.
Children had to pledge a minimum of £10 to take part in the sleepover, which raised £426 towards the target of £50,000.
If it reaches the target, the school would be able to bid for £500,000 from the Government to become a mathematics and computing specialist school.
Headteacher Rita Rees said: "I got the idea for the sleepover from a magazine. We have already been donated £20,000 by the Trading and Enterprise Council, as well as £5,000 from the Parent Teacher Association, so we have still got a way to go.
