THE region's orchestra, The Northern Sinfonia, has moved a step closer to its new home in the Music Centre Gateshead.

The orchestra and administration staff, based at Jesmond Vale, Newcastle, have moved across the river to Gateshead Town Hall.

Other North Music Trust employees, from Folkworks, Westgate Road, and those at the Gateshead Quays Visitors' Centre, join them this week.

Alison Manwell, senior secretary, said: "I have grown attached to the Sinfonia Centre, but at the same time it will be great to be under one roof with my new colleagues, who all form part of the North Music Trust."

When the centre opened in 1975, it was the first purpose-built orchestral administrative and rehearsal centre.

Anthony Sargent, general director of Gateshead Music Centre, said: "Gateshead Borough Council has very kindly made it possible for us to house all North Music Trust staff under one roof in the period leading up to the opening of its magnificent new home, Music Centre Gateshead.

"The town hall was once used as a venue, so it is well used to the sound of music."

Council leader George Gill said: "We are delighted that Northern Sinfonia's new home is in Gateshead.

"This takes us a step closer to the day when they will be in their permanent new base, at the Music Centre Gateshead.

"It is also a great new use for one of Gateshead's most historic old buildings. I also know the acoustics are good so I am sure they will enjoy themselves there.
