ENERGY-saving youngsters have won an award for their efforts to help the environment.

Durham's Framwellgate Primary School won an energy efficiency certificate from gas company Transco and the Northern Energy Efficiency Initiative. The certificate was presented by Energy Minister Brian Wilson at a ceremony in Newcastle.

A Transco spokesman said: "The school impressed by its general awareness and sensitive use of energy.

"Lighting was used effectively and switched off when not required. Photo-cells are used to control lighting in installations close to windows.

"The heating requirements are carefully monitored and the heating system controlled to match those requirements."

Headteacher Margaret Rich-ardson was delighted with the award. "It came as quite a surprise. A lot of the children turn off the lights when they are not needed. We are saving money as well," she said.
