YOUNG gymnasts put on a display for an executive yesterday in an attempt to promote their activities.
Mike Collier, chief executive of regional development agency One Northeast, visited Deerness Valley School, in Ushaw Moor, to see members of the sports acrobatics group in action.
Comprising mainly of pupils from Deerness Valley, the group trains in the school hall, but proposes to move to the nearby Deerness Valley High Performance Centre, when customised refurbishment of the sports centre is complete.
Mr Collier aims to help the world-class group secure backing from local primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and employers, to enable as many young people as possible to take advantage of the facilities.
As part of the club's development, Deerness Valley School is formulating a flexible curriculum for years seven and eight, which will enable young gymnasts to attend practices at the high-performance centre, before starting school at 10.05am.
Two year seven students, Richard Hurst and Mark Forth, will travel to Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, at the weekend to represent the school in the British Schools' Championships.
