CAR-mad Victoria Astley has a job not every woman would want - but is loving every minute of it.
The 19-year-old is the only female mechanic at Croxdale Fast Fit near Durham, thanks to a modern apprenticeship through County Durham Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
Victoria, from Brandon, has won the respect of bosses and workmates at the garage with her enthusiasm and dedication. She spends one day a week at college working towards the qualifications she needs as a motor vehicle technician.
Garage manager Stuart Agnew said: "Vicky has only been here a few months, but she is doing very well and really proving herself.
"She is keen to take on any job that needs doing, and gives as good as she gets if the lads start with any banter."
Victoria had tried jobs in a supermarket and canteen after leaving school, but discovered they were not for her.
She said: "The jobs I tried when I left school just didn't suit me. My boyfriend is a mechanic and I had always enjoyed helping him work on his car.
"I soon realised that it was the job for me, started making inquiries and was really pleased to find out about modern apprenticeships."
She added: "It means I'm earning money at the same time as achieving the qualifications I need and I get one day off a week to attend college.
"Doing the theory alongside the practical work is really helpful and I'm working on services, MOTs and all types of repairs."
Modern apprenticeships and work-based learning cover more than 80 different careers. Details are available from the LSC County Durham on (01325) 372301.
