A POPULAR North-East businessman has died of a brain tumour, aged 74.
Alan Wadkins, founder of the Darlington tool firm which carries his name, died at his home in Mordon, County Durham, with his family by his side.
He had battled with cancer for nearly two years and was cared for by his wife, Nell, throughout his illness.
Mr Wadkins served with the 6th Battalion Parachute Regiment before working as an aircraft fitter.
In 1962, he moved to Clifton Road, Darlington, and started supplying Army surplus tools and equipment.
He retired from the business in 1990 to pursue an interest in motorcycles, both vintage and modern, and was still riding a motorbike until he was 72.
His business was handed over to his son, who continues to sell power tools to tradespeople and farmers.
As well as his wife of 52 years, Nell, he leaves daughters Ann and Sue and son Mike.
The funeral is at 1.15pm on Friday, at St Edmunds Church, Sedgefield, followed by cremation at Darlington
