Speed camera 'guinea pig'
THE council wants Castleton to be a "guinea pig" for a speed camera scheme.
Members are still trying to resolve the issue of traffic-calming in the village, and have agreed to make another bid to be involved in a new scheme which sees local authorities linking up with police on camera use.
At last week's meeting, it was also decided to take up an offer made by police commander David Short at the recent parish assembly. He said more officers were being trained to use hand-held speed equipment in rural areas, and the scheme could be applied to Castleton.
The issue is still undecided because many people were unhappy with the extent of traffic-calming plans drawn up by the county council.
GRIDS ISSUE: A public meeting is being called to debate the question of cattle grids. Chairman Herbert Tindall reported on a site visit around Castleton involving the Court Leet, parish council and sheep breeders. The council wants to keep a Castleton grid in order to have a village flock. The public meeting will be arranged by the National Park Authority.
JUBILEE MUGS: Children are to be given commemorative mugs for the Queen's Golden Jubilee. About 200 will be bought for distribution to local youngsters and about another 100 will be available for sale. The council also agreed to submit applications for cash grants to help villages celebrate the jubilee
