BUILDING work has begun on the first hospice in the North-East for terminally-ill babies.
Zoe's Place for Special Babies will receive its first four patients at the former Crossbeck convent, Normanby, near Middlesbrough, in late summer.
At a progress meeting on Tuesday, supporters - including the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Mrs Vilma Collins - were told that £360,000 a year was needed to run the project, which will offer 24-hour care for terminally-ill children, aged up to four.
General manager Mark Guidery thanked everyone who is helping to raise money for the hospice.
They include Pauline Turner, of Bankfields, Eston, who donated £525 after a sponsored white-water raft at the Tees Barrage and Paul Mackintosh, of Safeway, Stokesley, who is planning a sponsored cycle ride next month.
