The North-East's first group of Spanish nurses have begun an intensive induction programme to welcome them to the region.
The nurses may be the first of many, said Professor Brian Footitt, director of nursing development at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust.
The only male nurse, Angel Cabrera, 28, said: "I think it is a great professional opportunity. English nurses have a very special way of working."
His colleague, Guadalupe Fontan, said: "I am here to improve my English, to help my career and for better job security."
Prof Footitt said many nurses in Spain were restricted to short-term contracts with their own hospitals. The Spanish recruits have all been offered permanent employment.
"The nurses all have a good command of English, but we're also working with Middlesbrough College to give them extra language support," said Prof Footitt, who did not rule out further recruitment drives in Spain.
Most of the nurses will work in the James Cook University Hospital's heart unit.
