A GOODWILL mission, taking a fire engine to Kabul, has been hit by visa problems.

The 5,000-mile trek, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, to the capital of Afghanistan, has been delayed while negotiations take place.

A last-minute crew change left the group without a valid Iranian visa and they were forced to postpone their departure. Organisers are now planning a new route which is scheduled to leave on April 29.

John Tyreman, president of Harrogate Rotary Club, which is backing the expedition, said: "It's fraught with problems, but we are working hard to get it right."

Leader John Shackleton, who bought the vehicle to take a message of goodwill from the people of North Yorkshire, is being accompanied by a co-driver and a television team.
