LEGAL history is being preserved in Richmond at the town hall's old court.
Expert David Venables has made the journey north from Doncaster to begin the intricate and painstaking task of restoring the oak benches and panels in the room.
Already the project has shed new light on the Georgian fixtures and fittings, many of which began life elsewhere but were used in makeshift repairs during the 19th Century.
Mr Venables will even preserve old ink spills to ensure the courtroom's history is not lost.
He said: "I aim to conserve rather than restore.
"This was a functional room and there is a real sense of working history which must not be lost.
"Every little knock and bump and mark reveals the fact this was a working court, part of real people's lives.
"It is important to preserve all its oddities and idiosyncrasies," he said.
It is hoped the project will be completed in time for Richmond Town Council's mayor-making ceremony, scheduled for Monday, May 20.
