A BLIND powerlifter is earning a reputation as a sports masseur after starting up his own business.

Six months ago, Ralph Sample, 55, from Gateshead, decided to set up as a sport, health and fitness therapist after studying at Gateshead College.

With help from the Government's New Deal initiative and Inbiz, he now runs a thriving business from Gateshead International Stadium.

His client list has grown to about 50, and he offers treatment for sports injuries, as well as the stresses and strains caused by everyday activities, such as sitting at a computer.

Mr Sample is also a sportsman, having set five world records and won 80 medals for powerlifting, as well as 150 medals for athletics.

He said: "There is a lot of help out there for people who want to start their own business, and the fact that somebody might have a disability shouldn't put them off."
