NEWCASTLE midfielder Gary Speed relived the moment he helped skipper Alan Shearer create history, and declared: "There's so much more to come from him.'' Speed was the provider when Shearer became the first player to score 200 Premiership goals with his late strike in Saturday's 3-0 home win over Charlton.

Wales captain Speed, who had opened the scoring, played the through-ball which left Shearer in the clear to beat Addicks goalkeeper Dean Kiely and make it to another career milestone.

"Alan has been a fantastic player but there is a lot more to come from him,'' insisted Speed.

"He deserved to reach the landmark.

"I wouldn't say it had been preying on his mind before the game, but he had a couple of chances before he scored and maybe he had thought it wasn't going to be his day after their keeper pulled off an excellent save to deny him a few minutes earlier.

"But you can never write off Alan Shearer, as he proved again. It was a quality finish and it is fitting that he has done it at St James' Park.

"I won the ball in the tackle and controlled it. I knew I was quite near to goal, but I heard Alan's shout, played a simple ball, and he did the rest.

"I don't think Alan would have appreciated it if I had gone on and had a shot myself! "It is an amazing achievement for him to score 200 Premiership goals and I think you could see from the reaction of the players and how everyone ran over to congratulate him, that we are all absolutely delighted for him.

"It must be very satisfying for him after being written off by so many people during his career.'' Speed added: "It was a very happy dressing room. As well as Alan reaching the 200 mark, results have gone our way and we only need a point to secure that Champions' League spot.

"It has been a brilliant season for Newcastle and it was a brilliant day for Alan. What more can you ask for?'' Shearer had rookie Lomana LuaLua as his strike partner.

And the 21-year-old, in his first start this season and facing the club against whom he made his United debut as a substitute in this fixture last term, grabbed his second Premiership goal for the Magpies to establish a 2-0 lead shortly after half-time.

Speed said: "LuaLua has everything - pace, trickery and strength. He did very well coming into the side and scored a very good goal at an important time in the game.

"He is a special talent. We just have to smooth his rough edges a bit and he will be a top-quality player.''
