AFTER 60 years at the centre of Bishop Auckland's business and social life, a couple chose a quiet celebration for their diamond anniversary yesterday.

Former football club president and golf club captain Bill Botcherby and his wife Edith shared their special day with their son Peter, daughter Edwina Suffell and their families.

They married in St Peter's Church five years after meeting. Mr Botcherby worked for himself before the war, but was conscripted into the Army Militia and then transferred into chemical warfare work.

He joined the Royal Engineers and, as a new sergeant, was in one of the first tanks to land in France on D-Day.

Involved in heavy fighting before British troops entered Germany, he was awarded the Military Medal and the Oakleaf and was mentioned in despatches for gallantry and distinguished service.

During the war Mrs Botcherby opened her house to evacuees, including two nephews.

Later, Mr Botcherby joined his wife's family building firm Edwin Pye and became a director.

He served on the committee of Bishop Auckland Football Club for 40 years and was president for 26 years. As chairman of the supporters and social club, he oversaw improvements to the social club and dressing rooms. He captained Bishop Auckland Golf Club in 1966 and supervised the building of the clubhouse. He helped found the town's rugby club in 1976.

A keen Rotarian, he was also president of the Victoria Gentleman's Club
