YOUTH workers are to be appointed in Ferryhill and Chilton following the award of a £55,000 grant.
The project, to develop a support structure for young people, is being funded by Sedgefield Borough Council's Single Regeneration Budget local partnership.
Community appraisals for the areas highlighted a need for direct work with young people, to examine areas such as health, education, social and positive citizenship.
The project has been developed by Durham County Council's Education in the Community scheme and the voluntary organisation Disc.
The three-year funding will pay for a part-time youth development worker and part-time drugs worker. They will work closely with full-time Ferryhill worker, Beth Storey, and the Orbit 20 outreach project, in Spennymoor. They will also develop close links with existing groups and projects.
Diane Major, education in the community co-ordinator for Sedgefield, said: "This is great news for the young people in Ferryhill and Chilton."
