PROPOSALS to unite two business groups to help further local economic prospects have moved a step closer.

Following extensive discussions between the Malton and Norton Town Centre Management Company and the local Chamber of Trade, a decision to merge has been agreed in principle.

Talks are continuing to iron out the operational details of how the new Malton and Norton Business Alliance will work.

The driving force behind the new partnership has been the local town centre manager, Mick Gains.

He said yesterday: "We have made real progress towards establishing this new structure, which will take a strategic lead in partnership with other organisations and agencies to take forward a whole range of issues which affect commercial growth and development in the towns.

"It is envisaged that a new board will be created out of the existing organisations, with a new corporate style and brand."

The alliance aims to attract a strong membership from the 300-plus businesses in the area.

The proposed membership scheme is based on the rateable value of the business, with subscriptions ranging from £40 for small retailer outlets to a maximum of £150 for major employers.

The chairman of the Town Centre Management Company, Jason Fitzgerald Smith, said: "We have made real headway on the Alliance, and we are reassured in the knowledge that local support for the proposals so far is strong.

"The new partnership will build upon the work of the last two years and will provide a greater degree of co-ordination and cooperation within the private sector of the towns.

"It should also prove to eliminate duplication of effort and maximise best use of resources."
