THE popularity of school meals has grown at a Teesside school with the introduction of a cafe.
Cafe 2K2 is proving to be so popular that the number of meals provided for students at Billingham Campus School has risen from about 120 each day to 600.
The school's decrepit and derelict boiler house was transformed into a trendy cafe, which provides a relaxed venue for students with a wide range of meals.
Another feature is the introduction of a cashless swipecard system, which avoids the use of money, allowing complete anonymity for free meal students, as well as ensuring students remain on school premises at lunchtime.
Anita Brown, Stockton Borough Council's services manager, said: "The transformation of the building is truly amazing.
"The rise in meals speaks for itself and it's clear to see how the students enjoy using the cafe.
"We have added a very nice touch with background music, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. The days of the old school meal service and tatty dining rooms are definitely history."
The cafe will be officially opened tomorrow.
