A FORMER soldier and policeman has been appointed to crack down on illegal street trading.
Mike Orchard, 35, has transferred from Sunderland City Council's treasurer's department to take up his new role as enforcement officer.
He will protect the city's shops and businesses from unfair competition posed by illegal street traders operating without licenses.
Mr Orchard joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers after leaving Washington Comprehensive School, and served in the Falklands and Northern Ireland. After leaving the Army he worked as a police constable.
He said: "I thought the experience in dealing with the public and close team working I brought from the Army, the police force and the council's treasury department would be perfect for the job."
