CONSTRUCTION companies are being urged to recruit and train now to prepare for the future growth and development of the sector.
The call to action has come from Newcastle College, at a time when it is seeking employment for almost 40 modern apprentices.
Nationally the Construction Confederation estimates the sector needs more than 70,000 new recruits every year for the next five years.
But so far enthusiastic trainee joiners, bricklayers and painters at the college have had few positive replies to their inquiries for work with local companies.
Colin Stott, head of the college's School of Construction, said: "We currently have a group of young modern apprentices who are crying out for work and an opportunity to prove their ability.
"They have clearly demonstrated their enthusiasm and motivation over the past six months and are now in a position to make a real contribution to business."
He added: "Forward-looking employers who want to be in a position to respond to new contract opportunities could start by adding some of these young people to their workforce."
"The North-East skyline is changing continually as new construction projects spring up. The increased availability of Government funding of capital projects, National Lottery funding and new industry coming into the area suggests this development will continue.
"Such work could be jeopardised if companies can not recruit the skilled workers they require."
Employers looking to take on modern apprentices from the college will need to pay their wage and agree to release them one day a week for further training.
