A SCHOOL fun run which had to be postponed because of the foot-and-mouth crisis is hoping to raise more than £3,000 for science equipment.

Hummersknott School and Language College is staging the race on Sunday, June 23, to raise £3,500 to restore a greenhouse used by the school's science department to grow plants for use in lessons.

The race has been held every year since 1988, but the foot-and-mouth outbreak meant it was cancelled last year.

The fun run organiser, Philip Boyle, said: "We have planned the event so it does not clash with any England matches in the World Cup, so there is no excuse not to take part."

Teachers and pupils want to replace the school's greenhouse which has been out of use for two years, because it is in a dangerous condition.

Two fun runs will be held on the day: one of two-and-a-half miles and another of six miles.

Serious runners are welcome to attend the event, which will also attract families from the school and nearby primary schools.

At the last event, 350 people turned out to take part.

Mr Boyle said: "The greenhouse allows us to carry out essential bits of the national curriculum and so we are desperate to replace it. As well as the fun run we will be holding an auction on the day and the PTA will be running various fund-raising stalls."

Runners must pay £4 to compete and the school would like people to register before the day.

Items to auction or sell are also needed, as are gardening tools or equipment.
