A driver who may hold vital clues about the hit and run accident which killed Leonie Shaw is being asked to come forward by police.

Accident investigators are trying to trace the driver of a dark, 4-track vehicle, as it was believed to be travelling on the Bishop Auckland by-pass when six-year-old Leonie was tragically hit by a car.

PC Dave Beverley, from the police accident and investigation unit, said the 4-track car was travelling in the opposite direction at the time.

He said: "We don't know if the driver of this vehicle was male or female, but I would urge them to come forward as they may have important information which will help us with our enquiries."

The unit can be contacted on (0191) 3864929.

* The girlfriend of the man accused of killing Leonie Shaw is due to appear before Sedgefield Magistrates today (Fri 26). Emma Jane Lee, 21, who lives with Colin Meek at Salvin Street, Spennymoor, is charged with aiding and abetting the failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
