SPORTS celebrities including footballers Alan Shearer, Niall Quinn and Peter Beardsley gathered for a charity golf tournament yesterday.
Twenty celebrities joined teams from local companies for Steve Harper's Celebrity Golf Challenge, at Ramside Hall Golf Club, in Durham City.
The event aimed to raise money for the Clarke Lister Brain Haemorrhage Foundation, of which Steve Harper, the Newcastle United goalkeeper is a patron, with former Middlesbrough FC manager Bryan Robson, former Newcastle United star Paul Gascoigne and radio presenter Paul Gough.
For a £250 fee, teams were each joined by a celebrity and competed for prizes and trophies for the longest drive and nearest to the pin.
The foundation was set up by Peterlee couple Carole and Brian Lister after their son, Clarke, died from a brain haemorrhage in 1996, aged ten.
Mr and Mrs Lister aim to raise £1.2m to fund research and a support network.
Mrs Lister said: "I was honoured that so many celebrities came to the tournament. It linked with Clarke's lifestyle, as he was mad on football and a true Newcastle United supporter."
The tournament was followed by an auction and a dinner.
