POLICE have launched an investigation after a body was discovered in a waste factory on Teesside.

It has not been revealed whether the body is that of a man or a woman but senior detectives are now investigating the death.

The body was discovered by workmen at Teesside Waste Management, in Middlesbrough, at around 2pm today

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: "Police are investigating the discovery of a body at a factory site in Middlesbrough.

"Officers were called to the Teesside Waste Management premises just after 2pm.

"The body was discovered by workmen sorting and grading piles of rubbish in a giant shed on the site.

"The rubbish is delivered by skip wagons from all over the North East.

"At this stage police are not revealing if the body is male or female. Work is ongoing to try to identify the remains.

"Senior detectives are on the scene along with specialist scene of crime officers. A Home Office pathologist has also been called in.

"Detectives have requested the North East air support unit to carry out a video survey of the site and surrounding area."
