Speed limit action move
A 20mph speed limit could be imposed in Reeth and Richmond's Bargate, if the public agrees. North Yorkshire County Council has agreed similar schemes for School Bank, at Middleton Tyas, and Brompton Park, Brompton-on-Swale, which are both out to consultation, and for Wavell Road, in Catterick Garrison, subject to public approval. Schemes for Bargate and Reeth village could go ahead over the next two years at a combined cost of £50,000. If objections to either is received, the council's Richmondshire area committee will re-consider the matter.
NEW ROLE: Mary Dodman has taken over from Roz Elders as the head of the Millennium Volunteers scheme in Northallerton. The scheme sees youngsters give up a few hours a week for community-based projects, such as playing concerts for the elderly or helping out at local charities. Based at Northallerton College, Miss Dodman, 22, will head the £178,000 project as it expands to cover the whole of Hambleton.
MORE ROOM: Customers at Reeth post office can enjoy more room following a refurbishment, which has also provided a new counter. Workers arrived on Tuesday to knock down a partition wall and install the new counter as part of a refitting of the premises. Postmistress Jenny Curtis said the work provided more space for staff and customers and, by the end of May, would allow more room to display goods.
HISTORY WALK: Northallerton historian Jennifer Allison will lead a walk around the town on Thursday, May 9, from 1pm to 2.30pm, as part of local history week. Free tickets for the event are available from the library.
POOL WORK: Safety at York's oldest swimming pool complex has been boosted following a council refit. Part of Yearsley Pool, built in 1908, was closed off in February as a precaution after a problem with a drainage grille, but the overhaul has allowed the pool to be fully opened again.
FOCUS ON JUBILEE: Exelby, Leeming and Newton Parish Council meets on Monday, at 7pm, in Leeming and Londonderry County Primary School, when arrangements for the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations and a members' code of conduct will be among topics on the agenda.
WORK OVER: A £50,000 scheme to refurbish Stokesley High Street's toilets has been completed. Hambleton District Council said the work to upgrade the facility had provided a more pleasant environment.
