POLICE are trying to trace the driver of a Land Rover who raced towards two teenagers - just missing them - in a motiveless road rage incident.
A police spokesman said the driver had deliberately driven his vehicle at the two boys on a secluded road about a mile from Shotley Bridge, at about 9pm on Friday.
The two 15-year-old boys were at a bus stop with two girls, one aged 15, the other 13, when they first spotted the black or dark green Land Rover Freelander.
The vehicle came to a sudden stop about 150 yards from the group and an interior light was seen to go on.
PC Chris Drover said: "Because of the remote location and the sudden stop the teenagers became immediately suspicious and were watching the vehicle. As they crossed the road towards their homes, the Land Rover accelerated off at speed."
They continued to watch the road and spotted the vehicle returning from Shotley Bridge in the direction of East Law. It then turned in the road and headed back towards Shotley Bridge.
The two boys started to cross the road.
PC Dover added: "When they saw the vehicle coming towards them they stepped back on to the pavement. The driver appears to have deliberately crossed to the wrong side of the road and driven towards them. He missed the boys by less than a metre."
The driver got out of his vehicle, hurled abuse at the group before driving off.
PC Dover said: "There was no logical explanation nor motive for the driver's behaviour. We believe at least one car passed the scene and we would like to speak to anyone who could provide information about the Land Rover or driver."
