A MAN will appear in court today charged with possession of heroin with intent to supply after police discovered £50,000 worth of the drug at a house in Middlesbrough.
Officers searched the house, in Grove Hill, at 5.40pm on Friday. A 33-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were arrested. The man will appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court this morning, while the woman has been released on police bail pending further inquiries. Detective Superintendent Adrian Roberts said: "This is one of the biggest recoveries ever made in Middlesbrough."
JAZZ RETURNS: After a break of several months, The Tees Valley Jazzmen are to make a return to the Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield, County Durham. The band will entertain jazz enthusiasts on the third Sunday in each month, with the next performance on May 18, at 8.30pm. Admission costs £3 and includes soup and sandwiches. An event is also being organised for May 5, when the band will be accompanied by The Fenner Sisters. Admission for that is £5 and also includes soup and sandwiches.
THOMAS' FRIENDS: The South Tynedale Railway, at Alston in Cumbria, will be staging a Friends of Thomas weekend over the May Day Bank Holiday. There will be locomotives with faces of characters from the Thomas the Tank Engine children's books running hourly between Alston and Kirkhaugh, Northumberland, and other attractions. POLICE APPEAL: Police in South Wales are trying to contact a woman and her family who live in the Darlington area. Cardiff police are eager to speak to Margaret Jacka, or anyone who knows her, following an incident in the Welsh capital on Friday night. ART INVITATION: The University Gallery at Northumbria University is inviting artists to submit work to celebrate its 25th anniversary. People can submit up to four works, for a fee of £6 each, and all pieces will be exhibited. The exhibition runs from July 26 to August 30. Entry forms, which are available from 0191-227 4424, and fees must be received by June 21.
RABBITS SAVED: Firefighters rescued 19 rabbits from a burning shed at the weekend. A Durham fire brigade spokesman said it was called to extinguish a fire at a shed opposite Hill Crescent. in Dawdon, Seaham, east Durham, at 10.50pm on Friday. Firefighters were able to rescue all the rabbits.
MAN INJURED: A man suffered spinal injuries when his car was involved in a collision with the back of a lorry on the A1, between the Carrville and Bowburn interchanges, near Durham, at about 5pm on Saturday. The victim, who had to be released from his car by firefighters, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, before being transferred to Newcastle General Hospital.
