A WOMAN referred to as Mrs Haxby because of her fund-raising in the Yorkshire village celebrated her 100th birthday at the weekend.
Dorothy Embleton had lived in Haxby all her life until six years ago, when she moved to Pine Lodge Residential Home, in Hurworth, near Darlington, to be near her daughter, Betty Holton.
She dedicated her life in York to helping others and doing various charity work, and earned the title Mrs Haxby for her involvement in village life.
Her husband, Harry, died of cancer in 1963, but she continued her voluntary work until her eyesight began failing in her late 80s.
Among the charities she was involved with were Barnardo's, Meals-on-Wheels, and the WRVS, which presented her with a number of long-service medals.
She celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday with family and friends at the nursing home.
