A SECOND sign designed to calm traffic has been erected in the centre of a pavement in Darlington.
As reported in The Northern Echo last week, traders had complained to Darlington Borough Council when a speed hump sign was put up in the middle of the pavement in Duke Street.
The council admitted the sign was in a bad position and said they would remove it. But just days later, Conservative Councillor Bill Stenson was stunned to see another sign erected on the opposite side of the road, near his office.
Coun Stenson, who represents the Mowden ward, said: "It is absolutely ridiculous. Blind and visually impaired people find it difficult enough to walk around without having to face obstacles like this."
Earlier in the week, the council said the signs were part of measures to encourage motorists to slow down and because of traffic regulations, they had to install them a certain distance from the kerb.
