Spennymoor Community Learning is to host a programme of events to mark national Adult Learners' Week, which runs from May 11 to 17.

Throughout the week, visitors to the centre, in Festival Walk, can discover the range of free services on offer for training or employment, as well as the learning opportunities available locally.

Education in the Community's presentation of awards will take place at Spennymoor Comprehensive School at 6pm on May 14, with headteacher Ken Hall presenting prizes.

Programme details:

Saturday, May 11: 10am to 3pm, family learning - crafts. Demonstrations for parents and children of crafts, including embroidery, knitting, crochet, woodcarving, patchwork, fly-tying, making teddy bears, spinning, and making marzipan fruits.

Monday, May 13: 9am to 5pm, local history. Includes a display of old photographs and books, and local historian Bob Abley will be available to answer questions.

Tuesday, May 14: 1pm to 3pm, dyslexia awareness. Details of how dyslexia can affect your life, how to spot the signs of it, and how to support sufferers.

Wednesday, May 15: 9.30am to 11.30am, decorative paint effects. 1pm to 2pm, introduction to Japanese.

Thursday, May 16: 9am to noon, help your child's development by playing games with them. Learn how traditional games help children to develop the range of skills they need to help them learn, as well as social skills.

Friday, May 17: 9am to 11am, introduction to scanning. Take along any old photos you would like to have scanned and printed out, learn how to use the scanner and Adobe Photoshop to alter the images. 1pm to 3pm, introduction to digital photography. Learn how to use a digital camera, and then alter the images using Adobe Photoshop.
